LEAPS is TCU’s all-campus community service day that happens once a semester, sending hundreds of students, faculty and staff to multiple service sites around Fort Worth and Tarrant County. As a TCU tradition of service since 2000, LEAPS helps you explore service opportunities while getting to know your fellow Horned Frogs. I did not have the opportunity first semester to volunteer, but after seeing what a big deal it was at TCU, I wanted to volunteer this semester. A huge number of people on and around the area participate around campus and I thought that was so cool. Saturday was the LEAPS for this semester and I was excited to help out.
I worked on campus where kids from local schools came and were given a sack full out books. My job was to read with them for over two hours. It was actually kind of fun! I like to read, but I feel like as I get older it gets harder to find time to read. I don’t like being told what to read and I don’t like being told to read something boring. It kind of took me back to the days when I read some great books. Today I read with two boys, Jared and Jayden. They were pretty cool and for the most part liked to read. Like any kid, they don’t understand that this is a skill that you will use for the rest of your life. I tried to teach them that to a certain extent, but you know kids. I liked that they also asked us to write in every book something encouraging. I wrote them some really cool notes and I hope they look back one day and remember me.
In high school I spent a lot of time at the Miss Arkansas/ OT pageants supporting my friends, Hannah and Ashley. I know a lot about the system, weirdly, but I can say that while coming to college I have missed meeting people and making connections through my friends that competed. I was really surprised when I got to LEAPS and there were like 15 Miss Texas/OT titleholders. I about fell out because I have not seen a titleholder in ages… and I have never seen one in Texas. I had to introduce myself and so I did. I actually made some new friends! That was really cool and over all LEAPS was a great event! I can’t wait to do it again! Needless to say, I am thankful for LEAPS!
Today, I am thankful for last night and the great time I had at the ADPi black diamond formal with one of my best friends. I love any opportunity to wear a bowtie. The weather was great and overall it was a great time with such great people. The venue was in a really cool place and we danced the night away. Michelle is such a great friend to me and I appreciate that more than anyone will know. I was very unsure of what life would be like in college and who I would become friends with… Michelle is a great example of how God works that all out. She will do just about anything for me, she understands that I am usually late, she is so encouraging, and she has been such a light in my life when I needed it most. I am thankful for Michelle and the place she has in my heart. Never have I laughed so much in my life! Last night was another memory in the books with you and that is something truly be thankful for.
See how great it is to be thankful for life in general. What a great weekend with cool friends, fellowship, food, and fullness of the heart. I am oh so very thankful!
Yours Truly,
Southern and Thankful
